Fill The Frame Bali Photography Workshop 2024

Really fortunate to have been able to get tickets for the workshop conducted by Govinda Rumi (and team) and also Sanren. The 2-day workshop was conducted at a hotel, Titik Dua Bali, known for its unique and jaw-dropping architecture.

Arrived a day earlier to settle down and had the chance to group up with some fellow creatives, a lot of them I have never had the chance to meet but managed to chat on Instagram. Before I did that, I managed to get in some photographs that in my mind, captures the essence of what I have experienced so far.

We finally managed to settle down over coffee at Pisons! Amazing backyard that leads up to Manisan by the way.

Afterwhich, day one of the workshop finally commenced. It was Govinda and the team at Govinda Rumi and Friends (G.R.A.F.) to share first. It began with a ‘pre-wedding’ shoot conducted by Govinda, before we headed back to the shared space for him to explain and also share his philosophy. After which, his team members (Irene and Anggaran) shared about being a Personal Photographer, as well as aspects of Photojournalism.

The day ended with a photo review session as well as more Q&A!

Day 2 was all about Sanren, as they shared candidly about their perspectives and the way they shot. Two photography sessions were in place, one in mid-day and then another one in the evening, when the sun sets.

On my flight back from the Bali workshop, I finally caught the award-winning film, ‘Rain Man’.

Starring the impeccable Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, the movie revolves around how Cruise’s character discovering one day that he had an autistic brother (Hoffman) that was hidden away from him and how his character transformed from a greedy, self-centred person to a selfless one.

In a way, whether it be photography or in life, we are all just discovering a little more about ourselves each day. It is my third workshop ever since I took a leap of faith to become a full-time photographer, and I still find the aspect of learning to be alluring and fulfilling. Reflecting on the workshop, it has given me a chance to meet and speak with fellow photographers and in turn, learning from them. Their insights, their way of photographing, their way of life and also how they handle their business and teams. This I feel, is a bonus on top of learning from the instructors.

Outside of learning, it is also a chance to take a step away from what you are already doing, so that you can see the bigger picture and also have a glimpse of the road ahead. It is also a break, away from what you are being currently invested in, so that you can come back mentally stronger. Being around fellow photographers and like minded creatives also made me so happy! It was great meeting old and new friends.

Thank you GRAF and Sanren, for being so candid in your sharing, so patient with the questions and for also giving back to the community.

The experience definitely goes beyond learning.
